Greer Chamber Announces 2008 Legislative Agenda

December 14, 2007

(GREER, SC) The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors today approved the Greer Chamber’s initial 2008 Legislative Agenda in preparation for the 2008 Legislative Session.

The following issues are included in the 2008 Legislative Agenda:

• Affordable Health Insurance for Small Businesses:
The Greer Chamber Board of Directors voted to support bills that provide for the allowance of health insurance cooperatives and tax incentives for small businesses that offer health insurance.

• Economic Development Incentives:
The Greer Chamber Board of Directors voted to support incentives for businesses, and resources for tourism and entrepreneurship programs, as well as seed capital, which are needed to grow jobs, businesses, and the economy.

• Education:
The Greer Chamber Board of Directors voted to support educational programs that will train the workforce to meet the needs of business and industry, such as in the funding of the Education and Economic Development Act and The Center for Accelerated Technology Training (CATT).  The Chamber staff also will work with the school district to identify any challenges with school equity and the local control of school district projects.  Also, staff will review all education-related bills introduced to review importance to Chamber membership.  Finally, the Chamber will support a comprehensive approach to reforming education.

 Appropriations:
In order for South Carolina businesses to flourish, roads and bridges must be efficient and safe. Therefore, the Greer Chamber supports additional funding for road maintenance and repair, as well as for bridges. Furthermore, if South Carolina hopes to grow its business, it must have alternate modes of transportation to automobiles to move its people. Therefore, more funding to mass transit is necessary.
