Greer Chili Cook-off Announces Plans to Have More Chili

February 22, 2007

Greer, SC- The Greer Chili Cook-off presented by Greer State Bank will be improving the format this year to cater to more people.

“At the inaugural event in 2006, over 2,000 people attended and we were only expecting around 800-1,000. This year, we have plans to make sure that each person will get to sample some chili. Restaurants will now be selling “Chili Taster Cups” for $1 each. They are substantial in size, so you may only be able to eat 4-5 restaurants’ chili’s,” stated Lynn Pascazio, Director of Marketing for the Greer Chamber.

Organizers are expecting crowds to surpass 2,000 this year due to the additions of more restaurants, and the popular entertainment. Because the chili ran out so early last year, the Chili Cook-off committee decided this would be a great way to help with lines and chili shortages.

”Because the festival was brand new last year, no one knew what to expect. This year, we are going to be prepared with more chili and we hope that the community will come out and support all of these local restaurants,” added Pascazio.

The Cook-off committee is also pleased to announce the addition of “Celebrity Judges.” The judges will be trying each restaurants chili and picking their favorite based on aroma, color, consistency, taste, and originality.

The Greer Chili Cook-off presented by Greer State Bank will be held on Thursday, March 15 in historic downtown Greer from 6:00-9:00pm. Participating restaurants will be showcasing their culinary talents and creating many varieties of chili for the public to try.

Participating restaurants are Anna’s International Restaurant, Bistro Europa, Buffalo’s Café, The Bullpen, DQ Grill & Chili, Fatz Cafe, Frodo’s Pizza, Garner’s Natural Market & Café, The Great Bay Oyster House, Justin’s Steakhouse, Lunch & Such, M&J Crossroads, Sims BBQ, Southern Thymes Café, and Village Grill & Bar.

Chili winners will be announced around 8:45pm the evening of the event to award prizes. Winners will receive cash prizes and the first place winner receives the traveling trophy to be kept in their respective restaurant for the year.

Karen Roughton, Chili Cook-off Committee Chair added, “This event is a great way to just come out with friends and listen to great music. It kicks off spring in downtown Greer and we hope that people will come and support our local restaurants.”

The event will feature Budweiser, Thomas Creek Brewery, and Coca Cola products.

Restaurants will also be competing in a “Booth Competition.”

Musical entertainment will be provided by the 80’s cover band, RetroVertigo.
