July 26, 2011

The Upstate Workforce Investment Board (WIB) and Spartanburg Community College (SCC) have partnered to provide education and job assistance to Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union county residents who are unemployed, underemployed, dislocated and may have been to college but did not earn a degree. Individuals that fall within the above categories may be eligible for a Workforce Investment Act (WIA) scholarship to attend SCC.

“This is an excellent opportunity for 25 individuals to improve their lives by receiving the necessary education to find gainful employment in our community,” said Dr. Para M. Jones, SCC president. “The missions of the Upstate Workforce Investment Boardand the College go hand-in-hand – we fulfill local industry needs by providing the educational resources individuals need to land high-growth and high-demand jobs. These jobs require education and specialized training which are now more attainable thanks to the WIA scholarships provided by WIB.”

The WIB and SCC will host free WIA information sessions on Thursday, July 21 and July 28, at 5:30 p.m. on the central campus in Spartanburg in conjunction with “Discover SCC”, an event where individuals can learn more about the College, its programs, financial aid, and the admissions process. WIB staff will be availabletoinform prospects about WIA offerings and help them begin the process of seeking WIA scholarships. SCC staff will work with individuals to identify programs of study at the College that align with their educational and career goals. Those interested in attending can register for the event at www.sccsc.edu/WIA.

The WIA/SCC scholarship offers qualified individuals career opportunities in high-growth, high-demand occupations, many with starting wages of $12 an hour or more after training is completed. Possible occupations include-

“The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 is a job training law that focuses on workforce development at the national, state and local level,” explains Dana Wood, WIB’s OneStop Services Coordinator. “At the local level our number one goal is employment – it’s important to help the citizens of our community transition back in the workforce in a timely manner, and we have many resources available to individuals seeking employment and training.

“Our current focus is on short-term training for individuals who do not have marketable skills to obtain jobs in today’s competitive workforce. Our staff is available to help with barriers that may prevent individuals from achieving employment or successfully completing training,” Wood adds. “We inform our customers about high demand occupations where they can earn at least $12.00 per hour or more in the Upstate area.”
