Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce Recognizes Recipient of the 2009 Outstanding Leadership Award

August 31, 2009

(GREER, SC) The Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce and the Leadership Development Council have announced the selection of Dr. Nancy Welch as the recipient of second Annual Outstanding Leadership Award.  This award was designed to recognize a graduate of the Leadership Greer Program that has demonstrated effective leadership and furthered the growth of the community through active involvement in community/civic programs, organizations and/or activities.

President of Furman University, Dr. David Shi, was the guest speaker at this event sponsored by the Leadership Greer Alumni Association.  Members of the Leadership Greer Class XXX were introduced to the audience.

Dr. Nancy Welch has had an enormous impact on the lives of thousands of people in Greer and the Upstate through her work in higher education, through her community and civic work, and through the role model that she is to many people.  She was instrumental in the opening of the Greer Campus for Greenville Tech. There are numerous individuals for whom post-secondary education was not a possibility until that campus opened.  Nancy nourished it and grew it by working night and day for many years. Then, she moved to the main campus of GTC and created the One-Stop Center providing accessibility to multiple services under one roof.  Add to this the many boards and civic organizations which she has chaired and served on, investing tremendous personal time in events such as the Greer Family Fest, Habitat for Humanity Greer Project, the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Greer Community Ministries, Rotary Read to Me, her church and more.
As a graduate of Leadership Greer XVII, Dr. Welch has lived up to her promise to make a difference in the lives of others.

The announcement of the winner of the Outstanding Leadership Award was made on August 27th at the Outstanding Leadership Luncheon.  In addition to the Award, this event, organized by the Leadership Greer Alumni Association, served as a kickoff for the Leadership Greer Class 30 and the official passing of the gavels to the new Chairmen of each of the Leadership Greer program Boards for 2009-2010.

“We are very proud of our Leadership programs and wanted to recognize those individuals that continue to demonstrate leadership skills in the community,” said Patrick Fortenberry, Chairman of the Leadership Development Council and a local police officer “For twenty-nine years, graduates of this program have been making a difference in the Greater Greer community,” said Fortenberry.  “This award and the Leadership Luncheon will be a tribute to the accomplishments of our graduates and the continued success of the Leadership Greer Program.”
