Greer Chamber President, John Kimbrell, Resigns

January 22, 2010

(Greer, SC) Today, the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors announced the resignation of its President, John Kimbrell, who is leaving to pursue a new opportunity as CEO of the Gaston Regional Chamber of Commerce in Gastonia, North Carolina.  During his five and a half year tenure with the Greer Chamber, Kimbrell was successful in implementing a new tiered-dues structure, retiring all of the Chamber’s debt, instituting new programs and events, and growing the organization to over 600 members.

“This was one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make,” said Kimbrell.  “I truly love this community, the volunteers and the staff, and am thankful for the opportunities I have been given to be successful here.”  Kimbrell further stated his decision was totally unrelated to any issue associated with the Greer Chamber, but was entirely about the opportunity for growth in his career and the new challenges that come with that opportunity.  “I was not looking for this change, but an opportunity for this type of career advancement that truly matches my personal and career goals does not happen very often.”

Kimbrell’s departure comes on the heels of arguably the most successful year of the Chamber’s seventy-two year history when during one of the worst economic times decreasing membership at Chambers across the country, the Greer Chamber added 162 new members. The 2009 Chairman of the Chamber Board, Vic Grout stated, “John’s leadership and fiscal management skills were instrumental in putting us in a position to be successful this past year.”

2010 Chairman of the Board, Brian Martin, is confident the Chamber will continue to be successful.  “With the amazing staff we have in place, the experience of the leadership team we have, the strength of our membership and the unbelievably dedicated volunteers we have in this community, I have no doubt that the Greer Chamber will continue to thrive.”  The Chamber plans to appoint an interim President before Kimbrell’s departure to maintain a smooth transition while a thorough search is conducted for a permanent replacement.  Martin further stated, “John Kimbrell’s leadership and involvement in this organization and this community will be missed, but I am confident our search committee will identify a highly qualified candidate to fill the position, become a valued part of the Greer community, and lead this organization successfully into the future.”
