Leadership Greer Alumni Association to Host Annual Outstanding Leadership Awards Luncheon

August 21, 2009

The Leadership Development Council of the Greater Greer Chamber of Commerce has announced the dates for the Annual Outstanding Leadership Award Luncheon designed to recognize a graduate of a Leadership Greer Program that has demonstrated effective leadership and furthered the growth of the community through active involvement in community/civic programs, organizations and/or activities.  Alexis Lockyer, Chairman of the Leadership Development Council, says, "The Leadership Luncheon was established in order to highlight both the various leadership programs, as well as the continued accomplishments of leadership Greer graduates.  Over the 29 year history of the program, many outstanding leaders have graduated and continue to contribute to the prosperity of the Greer community.”

Mark your calendar for August 27th from 11:45- 1:00 pm. The event will be held at the Thornblade Club. Dr. David E. Shi will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Shi was named president of Furman University in 1994. A 1973 Furman graduate, he joined the university administration in 1993 as vice president for academic affairs and dean. Shi came to Furman from Davidson College, where he taught for 17 years and was the Frontis W. Johnston Professor of History. He won the Distinguished Teaching Award and also served as chair of the history department from 1987 to 1992.  A native of Atlanta, Shi graduated magna cum laude from Furman with a degree in political science. He was a member of the Paladin football team and was named to the All-Southern Conference team after his sophomore and junior years. After graduating from Furman, Shi earned M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history at the University of Virginia.

Nominations for the Outstanding Leadership Award have been accepted over the last few months.  Nominations can come from anyone and the only requirements are that the nominee be a past graduate of Leadership Greer or Junior Leadership Greer and that they have demonstrated effective leadership and furthered the growth of the community.  “The Leadership award is an opportunity for us to recognize a graduate of the Leadership Greer program who has contributed back to the Greer community utilizing the fundamental values of the program”, says Alexis Lockyer.

In addition to the Award, this event, organized by the Leadership Greer Alumni Association, will serve as a kickoff for the Leadership Greer Class XXX and the official passing of the gavels to the new Chairmen of each of the Leadership Greer program Boards for 2009-2010. The mission of the Leadership Greer Alumni Association is to develop leaders for the Greater Greer Area by providing training, networking and community service opportunities for graduates of Leadership Greer and other recognizable leadership programs.
The Leadership Greer Alumni Association strives to provide meaningful, enriching and diverse programs that will appeal to a wide variety of Leadership Greer graduates in order to keep them engaged in the community.  Through these programs alumni will continue to develop leadership skills and increase their understanding of the issues that impact the Greer community. The Alumni Association focuses on continued involvement through social events, networking opportunities, charitable causes, volunteerism and other special programs.
